FAQ

Why should I work with you and not someone on Better Help or one of those websites?

I am sure there are good therapists on those sites; however, those sites are not geared for high-quality, in-depth therapy for permanent change. The expectation on those sites is quantity, not quality. Most therapists working on those sites are not happy and, as a result, do not stick with them for long.

Therapy can be harmful or at least not helpful when working with someone who is not willing or able to focus on you and your individual needs and challenges.

I want to meet in person; where is your office?

We will meet here:

2900 Camino Diablo, Suite 100-1
Walnut Creek, CA 94597

I choose virtual sessions, but how do I access the appointments?

My preference is Google Meet (https://meet.google.com/), for which I will send you an invitation you can click during our session. I offer other options. We can discuss them when we set up appointments for you.

What is the difference between a psychologist, an MFT, and a social worker?

Most people are confused about the differences between different therapists. The difference is the number of years in school and training.

A psychologist is an academic doctorate with the highest training level. There are two different doctoral degrees: Ph.D. and Psy.D. I have a Psy.D., a doctorate in clinical psychology, and a Ph.D. in research psychology.

An MFT and a Social Worker have master’s degrees but not doctoral degrees.

How do I schedule an appointment?

There are many ways to schedule an appointment with me, and I will make it easy on you. You may email, text, or call me. You can also reach out using the contact form at the bottom of this page.

How long is a session?

Sessions are 50 minutes.

How do I pay?

I prefer Zelle, but I also take Venmo and PayPal, and some people even send checks by snail mail. I will try to make it easy, so if you have a particular preference, I will gladly accommodate it.

Do you take insurance?

No, I don’t take insurance; however, I am happy to provide you with a superbill, which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Why don’t you take insurance?

I used to take insurance, but I found my work was more about diagnosing people and explaining why they should be able to continue in therapy than focusing on my clients and their needs. The insurance companies were not concerned with the quality of care but instead focused on their bottom line.

Can I cancel a scheduled session?

Of course, you can cancel, but I ask for a 24-hour notice to avoid being charged. I set aside time for you and would like to have the opportunity to fill the spot if you cannot come.

Are you LGBTQIA friendly, and do you have experience working with that population?

Yes, absolutely! I have been providing therapy for over 20 years, and I have a great deal of experience and expertise working with the LGBTQIA population.

Do you work with couples and children?

No, I work with individuals from college age and beyond. Couples therapy and child therapy are very different skills and not what I have focused on.

I do have people in my network who specialize in couples or children whom I refer people to when they need them.
